Hughes County is located in central South Dakota. It is named for Alexander Hughes, a legislator.
Located on the Missouri River, the seat and largest city are both Pierre.
It borders Sully, Hyde, Lyman and Stanley Counties.
Main highways through the county include US-14, US-83 and SD-34.
